Beloved former Toronto Blue Jays player joins Sportsnet’s playoff coverage

Toronto Blue Jays fans will see a familiar face when they tune into postseason action this fall.

Sportsnet announced its broadcast team for this year’s Blue Jays playoff run, and while the usual voices of Dan Shulman and Buck Martinez lead the way, there’s also a well-known former player in the mix.

Recently retired Kevin Pillar will be in the action for the Sportsnet crew, working alongside another former Blue Jay in Caleb Joseph.

It’s the second postseason in a row that Pillar has worked on the Sportsnet desk, making appearances last year during the World Series.

When did Pillar play for the Blue Jays?

Pillar spent parts of seven seasons with the Blue Jays from 2013 to 2019, during which time he hit .260 with 55 home runs and 231 RBIs.  Pillar then played for nine different franchises after leaving the Blue Jays, suiting up for one-third of the teams across the MLB.

Pillar actually retired twice — first after the 2024 season, and then again midway through this year.

After initially calling it quits, he made the decision to attend Texas Rangers’ spring training and made the team’s Opening Day roster.

Pillar had a .209 batting average with nine hits, an RBI and six runs scored in 20 games this season. He was designated for assignment by the Rangers on May 25 and was unable to find another spot in the MLB.

“I talked to a lot of guys that are no longer playing anymore, and they said, you know, it’s near impossible to kind of retire and then come back, right? So I wanted to make sure that I was really done playing. And it started kind of eating at me a little bit,” he said in an interview on the Foul Territory podcast announcing his retirement.
