A 6-year-old has died after being hit by a school bus in Oklahoma.
On Wednesday, Dec. 3, the first grader, who attended Fillmore Elementary in Oklahoma City, was struck just one block away from his school at around 3:15 p.m., according to local media outlets News9, The Oklahoman and KOCO.
Local police said that three children got off the bus, which had been driving east on Southwest 51st Street, before the 6-year-old boy ran in front of the vehicle as it turned south onto South Douglas Avenue, The Oklahoman reported.
The child was taken to the hospital but later died from his injuries.
“When I got here, I saw medics working on the child. He appeared, whenever they were putting him in the ambulance, he appeared that he was not moving. He wasn’t conscious at all,” Orlando Bonilla, who lives across the street from where the incident occurred, told News9.

Bonilla, who only witnessed the aftermath of the incident, added, “It was devastating to see a child go that young.”
Michael Morgan, a parent who was in the area, added, “I wouldn’t know how to take that if one of my kids was run over by a school bus like that. That is very sad and like I said, I’m praying for the family.”
Officials from Oklahoma City Public Schools shared a statement with the outlet, saying they were “heartbroken” by the incident.
“We are heartbroken to share that a Fillmore first-grade student was struck by an OKCPS school bus a short distance from the school shortly after dismissal today,” they said. “Despite the efforts of first responders and medical personnel, the student has passed away.”
They went on to say that their thoughts were with the loved ones of the student, the first responders and the “entire Fillmore community.”
“Beginning tomorrow, we will have dedicated counselors and additional support staff on site to support our students and staff who may need assistance,” they continued.
Authorities are investigating the incident. Fault will be determined as part of the investigation, the Oklahoma City Police Department (OKCPD) said, per The Oklahoman.
PEOPLE has contacted the OKCPD, Oklahoma City Public Schools and Fillmore Elementary for comment.
