“Stranger Things” star Gaten Matarazzo says living with this costar while filming was ‘disgusting’

Stranger Things was akin to high school for its cast, but Gaten Matarazzo said living with costar Finn Wolfhard was “like a college experience.”

Matarazzo appeared on the podcast Dinner’s on Me With Jesse Tyler Ferguson to discuss the final season of the hit Netflix show, which he booked when he was just 12. The Broadway veteran shared how he lived with Wolfhard for a year while filming the last season.

“I would look around, like, three months after we were living together and be like, ‘This place is disgusting,'” Matarazzo, who plays Dustin Henderson on the show, said. “‘What are we doing?'”

When Ferguson asked which actor was messier, the Honor Society star said that they “kind of matched each other’s energy.” At first, the clutter would be contained to each other’s bedrooms. Over time, however, the mess would bleed into shared spaces. Matarazzo said that laundry would pile up and dirty dishes would stack up in the sink.

The longtime friends and costars didn’t “hold each other to a standard.” They got a rude awakening, though, when friends wanted to stop by and the duo realized their home wasn’t presentable to guests.

“Both of us would be like, ‘No. Do not come 10 feet to our home,'” Matarazzo said.

The two shaped up toward the end of their lease together. While Matarazzo said he wasn’t sure if they would live well with each other at first, he said that it was “so much fun” rooming with one of his best friends. It was a bittersweet way to spend the last season of this monumental show together.

The Stranger Things cast will bid farewell to Hawkins, Ind., after this fifth and final season. The first four episodes dropped Netflix on Nov. 26 on Netflix. Three more episodes will premiere on Christmas Day, Dec. 25.

Then, the two-hour series finale premieres on Dec. 31. It will also play in 350 theaters in the U.S. and Canada beginning on Dec. 31 at 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT through Jan. 1, 2026.

“Getting to see it on the big screen, with incredible sound, picture, and a room full of fans, feels like the perfect — dare we say bitchin’ — way to celebrate the end of this adventure,” the Duffer Brothers previously said in a joint statement.
