A winter weather system dropped 6 inches of fresh snow in some parts of the greater Chicago area Sunday morning, and prompted a ground stop at O’Hare International Airport.
The snow prompted a Winter Weather Advisory on Sunday for Cook, DuPage, Kane, McHenry, Kendall, Lake, Will, and Grundy counties in Illinois, and Lake County and Porter County, Indiana. The advisory was supposed to expire at 9 a.m., but has since been extended until 11 a.m.
The ground stop was enacted at O’Hare until 9:15 a.m. due to snow and ice.
The snow Sunday morning was blamed for a mess in multiple way at O’Hare. Inside, 146 flights had been delayed as of 9 a.m., and flights were delayed an average of 77 minutes.
Meanwhile at O’Hare, slick roads led to a crash near Terminal 2. A door was ripped off a sport-utility vehicle.
Midway International Airport did not report any cancellations.
How much snow fell
The highest snow total as of 9 a.m. was in Fairdale, an unincorporated community in DeKalb County, with 6 inches.
Rockford saw 5.7 inches, Wadsworth 5 inches, Batavia 4.1 inches, O’Hare 4 inches, and Midway 3.6 inches.
More snow may be coming
The steady snow from a passing weather system was expected to taper off after 9 a.m., but this does not mean snow will be over for all of the Chicago area.
As the system snow departs, a cold wind flow over Lake Michigan may generate lake-effect snow showers Sunday afternoon and this evening.
Additional accumulation of a dusting to one inch is possible.
Otherwise, look for a cloudy and cold night on the way with lows in the teens.
