Great British Bake Off star Dame Prue Leith has given fans a rare glimpse behind the scenes of the Channel 4 show as she lifted the lid on how contestants really feel about Noel Fielding and Alison Hammond.

Having worked her way up to being one of the country’s most respected bakers, it was in 2017 that she gained a new level of stardom when she took over judging duties from Mary Berry after Berry decided to step away from the show.

However, as the show made its long-awaited return to our screens in recent weeks, during a chat with Radio Times, co-judges Paul Hollywood and Dame Prue shared what advice they would give new contestants on the show.

Answering first, Paul responded rather bluntly as he quipped: “Ignore Noel and Alison when they try to make conversation.”

Meanwhile, Dame Prue shared a rare insight into the contestants’ mindset, saying: “Sometimes the bakers long for them to go away, because they’re against the clock and want to get on with it.”

In last Tuesday’s GBBO episode, fans saw the amateur bakers take on the challenge of creating three chocolate-based desserts in what was billed as Chocolate Week. Up first for the aspiring bakers was the task of making their interpretation of chocolate mousse.

Next up was carefully constructing a white chocolate tart, but with just two and a half hours to do so. For the famous showstopper challenge, the bakers were put through their paces as they rustled up a chocolate fondue display.

Away from the show, Dame Prue’s journey into the culinary world began back in 1960 when she swapped her native South Africa for London to study at the Cordon Bleu Cookery School. Nine years down the line, she opened her first restaurant, Leith’s, in Notting Hill, London.

She later went on to start her own cookery school, as well as writing a number of cookbooks and food columns.

She gained even further recognition in 2006 when she appeared on The Great British Menu, before joining The Great British Bake Off 11 years later, after Dame Mary Berry stepped away from her role.

This week, contestants will go head-to-head once again, and this time they will be tasked with producing their best pastry creations in a bid to take one step closer to the final.

The Great British Bake Off is set to return to our screens this evening at 8 p.m. (7 October) on Channel 4.
