Smithsonian museums closed Sunday as federal shutdown enters third week

Clouds overhead and a fall breeze made for a chilly Sunday morning on the National Mall, but a steady stream of visitors still arrived at the Smithsonian Museum of Natural History.

One by one, groups gathered by the entryway, where a small printed notice announced apologetically that the museum was closed because of the government shutdown. Someone tried the handle and shook the locked doors.
