Armored truck heists: 2 in custody as police track suspects believed to be connected Brink’s robberies in Philadelphia region

BALA CYNWYD, Pa. (WPVI) — Three people are in custody after a police chase Friday involving suspects who are believed to have been connected to armored truck robberies in the Philadelphia region.

An investigation is underway that may be connected to armored truck robberies in the Philadelphia region.

Chopper 6 was over a home in the unit block of Colwyn Lane in Bala Cynwyd just before 1 p.m., where it appears another person was taken into custody by police. It is unclear if it is connected to this case.

This, after two others were arrested in West Philadelphia a short time earlier.

A shelter-in-place was issued in the Bala Cynwyd area, including at nearby schools, as police searched for the suspects. It remains in place as of 1 p.m.

“Police are in pursuit of a robbery suspect. Please do not go to our school buildings or pick up your children until further notice,” the Lower Merion School District said to the community.

The schools that are currently in lockdown include: Belmont Hills Elementary School, Cynwyd Elementary School, Merion Elementary School, Penn Valley Elementary School, Penn Wynne Elementary School, Bala Cynwyd Middle School, Welsh Valley Middle School, and Lower Merion High School.

According to officials, a suspect vehicle was allegedly approaching a Brink’s truck in Bala Cynwyd shortly before noon on Friday when it was spotted by law enforcement.

The vehicle then took off, sparking a police chase.

Police say they believe they were hot on the trail of the suspected thieves on Friday.

A perimeter has been established in the area of Snowden Road after officials say at least one of the suspects was spotted nearby.

Superintendent Andy Block, from the Lower Merion Township Police Department, says they were notified of three men in a car that were allegedly heavily armed, according to witness accounts. They are said to have been armed with handguns and long guns, and are believed to be on foot.

The two suspects taken into custody were arrested at 52nd and Parrish streets in West Philadelphia, according to police.

Video from Chopper 6 was over the scene, where a number of police vehicles could be seen, with officers focusing on a white Dodge Charger.

The FBI is also on the scene.

“If anyone sees these individuals, they are to not approach them. They are to call 911 immediately,” Block said.
