Transmission Line Trip Causes Thousands to Temporarily Lose Power

Thousands of households from St. John’s to Corner Brook lost their power Tuesday evening.
Newfoundland and Labrador Hydro, which produces about 90 per cent of the power consumed on the island, had a trip on a transmission line. That, in turn, resulted in ‘frequency load shedding’ – or taking customers offline to balance system frequency and ensure stability.
The outage affected a wide area of the province including the Avalon Peninsula, the Burin Peninsula, central Newfoundland and Corner Brook and surrounding area.
It’s the second such incident in the last couple of weeks. A similar incident resulted in an overnight power outage affecting many areas of the island in September.
Tuesday’s outage did not affect all households however, as power was maintained to some pockets.
