Laura Dern Nods to the Art Deco Movement in Elie Saab at the ‘Is This Thing On?’ London Screening

Laura Dern revived the Art Deco movement in her Elie Saab look for the United Kingdom gala screening of her new film “Is This Thing On?” in London on Monday night.

Styled by Elizabeth Stewart, Dern wore a look from Elie Saab’s pre-fall 2025 collection, featuring nods to the century-old aesthetic Art Deco style. The “Marriage Story” Oscar-winner’s look consisted of a short-sleeve black and gray checkered top with a V-shaped neckline.

The top included a thick cinched waistline with a peplum element that gave way to the flowing maxiskirt of the ensemble. Keeping her sartorial statement the focal point of her look, Dern accessorized with simple jewelry pieces — pearl drop earrings and a coordinated necklace.

Elie Saab’s pre-fall 2025 collection debuted as part of Paris’ pre-fall showcase in January 2025. The Lebanese designer’s curation of daywear and evening styles referenced the Art Deco movement and ’70s disco styles in equal measure, per Rhonda Richford’s WWD review of the collection.

“Saab served as a conductor this season, taking us along for a ride imbued with cues from Art Deco to disco, for a streamlined yet sultry take on eveningwear that stayed true to his signature glamour. The collection was strong on solid colors, such as emerald, and touches of lace and velvet,” Richford wrote in WWD’s review.

“Sequined jumpsuits stepped up here — a silver zebra print version shined while a high-necked black edition flared with a bright floral at the bottom for a dash of dance-the-night-away insouciance.”

Throughout 2025, museums and fashion brands alike celebrated the centennial of the Art Deco movement from museum installations and exhibits to fashion collections and more. Emerging in Paris beginning in 1925, “cleaner geometries and stylization came to the fore with new directions that could be felt as early as the 1900 Exposition Universelle, the World’s Fair celebrating human achievement, as well as at the Salon d’Automne, where rectilinear furniture echoed throughout the ateliers across the city,” per WWD’s reporting on the Art Deco movement in October 2025.

Starring Dern and Will Arnett, “Is This Thing On?” follows Alex, played by Arnett, and Tess, played by Dern — a couple whose marriage is unraveling while Alex navigates his career in the New York City comedy scene. The film is now in theaters.
