Netflix Adds Three NFL Games In Major Step-Up Of League Relationship

Netflix is expanding its relationship with the NFL, adding three regular-season games to its existing Christmas Day double-header.

The company’s chief content officer, Bela Bajaria, announced the moves, which are part of a four-year extension with the league through 2029-30, at the company’s annual upfront presentation in New York.

The streaming giant said it will carry an LA Rams-San Francisco 49ers game from Australia on September 10, on the first weekend of the season. It will be the league’s first game played Down Under, amid an aggressive international push that has put games in Mexico, Brazil, Germany and the UK in recent years.

On Wednesday, November 25 (the night before Thanksgiving Day, an annual blitz for the NFL), Netflix will have exclusive rights to a Green Bay Packers game against the LA Rams at SoFi Stadium.

The company also said it has taken rights to a Week 18 game on January 9, the final day of the regular season, when playoff berths will likely be on the line.

That matchup, as well as the teams facing off in the third year of its current deal for Christmas Day, will be revealed Thursday when the league unveils its schedule. Last year’s Minnesota Vikings-Detroit Lions game on Netflix set a record as the most-streamed regular-season game in U.S. history.

Along with the new games, Netflix also confirmed reports it was looking to grab the NFL Honors, a ceremony for the MVP Award and other accolades that airs during the runup to the Super Bowl.

In addition to streaming live in more than 200 countries, the games will air on local over-the-air broadcast in the markets of the teams playing.
