Big Trouble Captain reflects on winning Big Rock on final day in 2025

MOREHEAD CITY, Carteret County — Chris Daniels and his boat, Big Trouble, are aiming to repeat as winners of The Big Rock Blue Marlin Tournament.
Daniels, a Morehead City native, and his crew won last year’s tournament on the final day of competition after reeling in the winning blue marlin. The victory also came with the Fabulous Fisherman’s prize, adding to the dramatic finish.
For Daniels, the win was 17 years in the making. His name and crew are now etched into the tournament’s fountain stone of winners, marking a major milestone in his fishing career.
While winning the tournament is the ultimate goal, Daniels and his crew say the reason they compete goes beyond the prize money. For them, it is about the joy of fishing, the competition and the support surrounding the tournament each year.
Daniels has had support from his parents throughout the journey, and the applause has extended beyond family. Last year’s hometown win gave the Morehead City community plenty to celebrate.
This year, 277 boats are registered to compete in the 68th annual Big Rock Blue Marlin Tournament, making the field steep once again.
Still, after last year’s final-day victory, Daniels and his crew are hoping Big Trouble can make another run at the top spot.
