President Jeffrey R. Holland dies from kidney disease complications at age 85

SALT LAKE CITY (KUTV) — President Jeffrey R. Holland died after being hospitalized for complications related to kidney disease, according to leaders with The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
Church officials announced Holland’s recent hospitalization on Wednesday, which was Christmas Eve.
Holland passed away while surrounded by family at about 3:15 a.m. Saturday morning. He was 85 years old.
Holland was appointed the president of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles earlier this year. He was called as an Apostle in 1994, and before that, served as a General Authority Seventy for five years.
Prior to being called to serve in the church’s leadership, he held several positions in its educational system, including president of Brigham Young University. He also worked as commissioner of the Church Educational System (CES) and dean of BYU’s College of Religious Education.
Elder Quentin L. Cook, a member of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, was a missionary companion to Holland in the early 1960s. Cook said even then, Holland had a “fabulous” talent for teaching the gospel.
“I have loved President Holland since those early days [as a young missionary],” Cook said. “He was extremely good then, and there [was] nobody better in the Church at teaching.”
Holland’s wife, Patricia Terry, passed away in 2023 from complications of COVID-19 and other respiratory issues. They had three children together.
He is survived by their children, along with 13 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.
