Auston Matthews leads by example as Team USA prepares for big test in Milano Cortina 2026 semi-finals

Auston Matthews and Team USA focus on the positives
Matthews and company put up 40 shots on Wednesday, but got stymied by a stellar performance from Swedish netminder Jacob Markström (New Jersey Devils). Slovakia averages nearly three goals against per game, a good sign for the U.S., as they enter the contest averaging 4.5 goals per game.
The U.S. defense will get its greatest test Friday, as Slovakia is averaging four goals per game at Milano Cortina 2026. Matthews felt the game against Sweden was a good showing in that department.
“I thought we did a good job defending and (Connor Hellebuyck) probably made some great saves when we needed,” the Arizona native added.
“I think we can always continue to build our game and take the positives, take the stuff that we can get better at. We’re excited about where we’re at in this position.”
The Americans know they have to level up from the preliminary rounds if they want a chance at gold. Matthews will be a key offensive part, as he’s been in the tournament previous.
“Seeing him score is huge for us,” Matt Boldy told the media after a 5-1 win over Germany on 15 February. Matthews tallied two goals.
However, it’s what he does to set up the team that gains him the respect and praise of his teammates.
“There are a lot of things he does really well. Even when he is not producing, there are things that people might not notice. Everyone is always focused on his goal scoring – and rightfully so, he is one of the best goalscorers in the world – but since we have been here, he is such a leader for us with the way he plays the game,” Zach Werenski said.
“He plays the right way. He is always getting chances, winning face-offs, and tonight it is nice to see him get rewarded.”
