Steam users report widespread outage Friday, Downdetector shows

Gamers who use the streaming platform Steam might be dealing with some outages.

According to Downdetector, as of 1 p.m. Friday, there were more than 11,000 reports of outages.

Here’s what we know about the outages.

As of 1:17 p.m. Friday, Steam had not issued a statement about its service status or the cause of the outages. An unofficial Steam server status website said that both Cloudflare and Akamai were investigating connectivity issues.

“Cloudflare is continuing to restore service to customers.  Cloudflare has also identified a way for impacted customers to self-resolve impact by readvertising prefixes via the Cloudflare dashboard,” Cloudflare said in it’s latest update.

Launched in 2003, Steam allows users to buy, download and play games on their computers. It also offers social features such as friends lists, chat, cloud saves and multiplayer matchmaking. Over time, it has become one of the largest PC gaming platforms in the world, with thousands of titles from major publishers and independent developers.

In addition to PC gaming, Steam supports handheld devices such as Valve’s Steam Deck and includes features like game streaming, community forums and user reviews.

According to Downdetector’s heat map, Steam was reporting outages in North and South Texas near major cities such as Dallas and Houston.

Most reported problems involved server connections, accounting for 43% of reports. Another 26% of users reported issues logging in, and 17% reported game launch issues.
