CHICO, Calif. — Police are investigating a shooting at the Butte County Library on Sherman Avenue in Chico that left two people dead and a juvenile injured on Monday, June 22, 2026.

During a news conference Monday evening, Chico Police Chief Billy Aldridge said officers received reports of shots fired inside the library at about 5:12 p.m. Dispatchers also received a 911 call during which gunshots and screaming could be heard.

Aldridge said officers quickly formed an entry team and entered the building. The suspect fled out the back of the library before being taken into custody. Police said there is no ongoing threat to the public.

Two adults were killed, and a juvenile was injured in the shooting. The victims’ names are being withheld pending notification of their families. Family reunification efforts are underway at Chico First Assembly of God Church.

Police said the library was open at the time of the shooting. No shots were fired between the suspect and responding officers, according to Aldridge.

Investigators have not released the suspect’s identity or additional information about the firearm involved, saying only that a single firearm was used.

Multiple law enforcement agencies are assisting with the investigation. Police said the surrounding streets are expected to remain closed for several hours as investigators process the scene.

All Butte County Library Branches will be closed on Tuesday, June 23, 2026.
