What is the history between the Miami Hurricanes and Stanford Cardinal?

What were the expectations for the Miami Hurricanes and Stanford Cardinal entering the season?

Stanford was voted to finish 17th in the ACC.

How has the season gone so far for the Miami Hurricanes and Stanford Cardinal?

The Hurricanes swept through their nonconference schedule, with wins over the then-No. 6 Notre Dame Fighting Irish, Bethune-Cookman Wildcats, then-No. 18 USF Bulls and Florida Gators. Miami then opened ACC play with a 28-22 win over Florida State before losing to the Louisville Cardinals for their first defeat of the season.

Stanford has been great at home, winning all three of its games there (Boston College, San Jose State and, most recently, Florida State), but has lost every road game this year (Hawaii, BYU, Virginia and SMU). That said, the team’s three wins already this season matches last year’s total.

What are three keys for the Miami Hurricanes against the Stanford Cardinal?

Get the offense back on track: The Hurricanes’ run game has been ineffective in ACC play so far and quarterback Carson Beck is coming off a four-interception game at Louisville. UM needs to get a rhythm going early.

Don’t let Louisville loss spiral: Miami has seen this happen the last few years when it gets off to a hot start.

10-0 in 2017? Three consecutive losses to end the year.

4-0 in 2023? A disastrous 3-5 in conference play that started with the failed decision not to kneel down against Georgia Tech.

9-0 in 2024? 1-3 the rest of the way.

Miami still has a chance to make both the ACC Championship Game and the 12-team College Football Playoff if it makes sure the Louisville game was just a one-off and that the 5-0 start to the season is more representative of what this team truly is.

Don’t give Stanford hope: Miami is a heavy favorite this week. It needs to play like it. Simple as that.

Who are three Miami Hurricanes players to watch?

Carson Beck: The veteran quarterback is coming off arguably the worst game of his career. He bounced back well when he struggled against Florida earlier this season by throwing four touchdowns against FSU. Can he have another bounce-back effort against a Stanford team allowing the third-most passing yards per game (304.7)?

Keionte Scott: The nickel corner has done a little bit of everything for Miami. He’s second on the team with 29 tackles, leads the team with seven tackles for loss, is one of nine players with a sack and has three pass breakups, four quarterback hurries, a forced fumble.

Malachi Toney: The freshman phenom is second nationally among first-year players in catches (38) and receiving yards (510) and has a good chance to break UM’s freshman records in both categories this season.

Who are three Stanford Cardinal players to watch?

Cole Tabb: With Micah Ford out after sustaining an injury against FSU, redshirt freshman Tabb will be the Cardinal’s primary running back on Saturday. He has held his own this year with 312 rushing yards and two touchdowns, including 118 yards and a touchdown last week against the Seminoles.

CJ Williams: The senior wide receiver and Wisconsin transfer leads Stanford with 39 catches, 465 yards and two touchdowns. He is one of four Cardinal players with at least 200 receiving yards.

Clay Patterson: The senior defensive lineman has four tackles for loss and a team-high three sacks on the season to go along with three quarterback hurries and a forced fumble.
