Shubman Gill Crosses 6,000 T20 Runs, Joins Virat Kohli In Elite IPL Captains List During CSK Clash – Watch

Shubman Gill delivered another statement performance in IPL 2026, smashing 64 off 37 balls against Chennai Super Kings before falling in the 13th over at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Thursday.

The Gujarat Titans captain walked off to a loud ovation after dismantling the CSK attack in an innings that combined clean strokeplay with calculated aggression. Gill struck seven fours and three sixes at a strike rate of 172.97, laying the platform for Gujarat with a dominant opening partnership alongside Sai Sudharsan.

The innings also saw Gill enter elite statistical territory in Indian T20 cricket.

When he crossed the 36-run mark, Gill became the third-fastest Indian batter to complete 6,000 runs in men’s T20 cricket, reaching the milestone in his 185th innings. Only KL Rahul (166 innings) and Virat Kohli (184 innings) have reached the mark faster among Indian batters.

Gill also crossed 600 runs in an IPL season as captain for the second time in his career after previously achieving the feat in 2025. The 26-year-old skipper joins Virat Kohli and KL Rahul as the only Indian captains to achieve the feat multiple times

The GT skipper was particularly severe on CSK left-arm pacer Spencer Johnson during the Powerplay, repeatedly finding boundaries through the off side and disrupting Chennai’s plans early in the innings. Gill brougth up his fifty off just 23 deliveries with a six against Noor Ahmed in the 7th over.

Ironically, Johnson eventually claimed Gill’s wicket. Attacking a full delivery in the 13th over, Gill mistimed his whipped attempt to send the ball flying high into the night sky towards midwicket where Shivam Dube did well to take the catch when backpeddaling. The dismissal ended a destructive 129-run opening stand between Gill and Sai Sudarshan.

Here’s a look at Gill’s dismissal.

By the time he departed, however, Gill had already shifted the momentum decisively in Gujarat’s favour.

The innings once again highlighted Gill’s evolution as a T20 batter. Rather than relying solely on power, he controlled the scoring rate through placement, timing and rapid strike rotation before accelerating against pace.

For Gujarat Titans, the knock arrived at a crucial point in the season as they look to secure second spot on the IPL 2026 table to gain the cushion of the qualifier. For CSK, it leaves them in a precarious position in what is a must-win clash for Ruturaj Gaikwad’s side.
