Pittsburgh Weather: Growing Season Ends After Killing Freeze Hits Region

Pittsburgh, PA – The National Weather Service in Pittsburgh has officially declared the end of the 2025 growing season following multiple frost and freeze events across Western Pennsylvania, Eastern Ohio, and Northern West Virginia.
According to a public information statement issued Sunday morning, Oct. 26, the decision was made after the region experienced its first widespread hard freeze overnight, signaling the seasonal transition to colder weather. The NWS stated that it made the call in coordination with surrounding forecast offices as subfreezing temperatures blanketed much of the tri-state area.
With this announcement, frost and freeze warnings will no longer be issued until spring 2026, as the cold has effectively halted any remaining agricultural growth. Residents and gardeners are encouraged to complete final preparations for winter, including shutting down irrigation systems and protecting any remaining outdoor plants.
This marks the official close of the 2025 growing season, a milestone typically reached by late October across the region. Temperatures are expected to remain seasonably cool through the week with occasional morning frost possible.
