Sally Lindsay is one of the most successful actresses in the UK, appearing in a number of stage productions and comedies over the years, after making a name for herself when she joined Coronation Street in 2001 playing Shelley Unwin. Although she left the Cobbles in 2006, Sally won “Best Actress” at the 2005 Inside Soap Awards for her part. After Coronation Street, Sally’s career went from strength-to-strength and she has since landed several major roles.

Her other roles include Lisa Johnson in the Sky One comedy-drama Mount Pleasant from 2011 to 2017 and Alison Bailey in ITV police drama, Scott and Bailey, a show she appeared in from 2011 to 2016. One of Sally’s most famous roles saw her play Kath Agnew in the BBC sitcom Still Open All Hours. That role came to an end in 2019.

Her most recent acting credit was Jean White in the popular Channel 5 show, The Madame Blanc Mysteries, a show which she co-created and produces. The series has aired since 2019.

Before finding fame, Sally appeared on on Top of the Pops when her school choir, the St Winifred’s School Choir, released There’s No One Quite Like Grandma which reached number one on the UK Singles chart in 1980.

She also tried her hand at stand up comedy in the years before landing her first acting roles. Alongside Peter Kay, she appeared in Phoenix Nights and in the video for the Comic Relief single “(Is This the Way to) Amarillo”.

She also appeared in comedy classic The Royle Family before her acting career took off. In the year before she landed the Coronation Street role, Sally starred as Twiggy’s girlfriend in one episode of The Royle Family.

Although she has firmly cemented her status as a TV star, the actress turned to theatre after leaving her role in Coronation Street. She has played the role of Marilyn Monroe in the production of musical Ella, meet Marilyn and Beatrice in Much Ado About Nothing.

Away from the screen and stage, Sally is married to the former drummer of The Style Council and Paul Weller Band, Steve White. They have twin sons Victor and Louie who were born in 2010.

She appeared in an episode of Through the Keyhole in December 2018, where it was revealed that she lived in Heaton Mersey, Stockport. Sally spoke to the Radio Times about the TV dynamic at home.

Speaking about her husband Steve, she said: “He’ll watch nonsense about catching monsters in the deep. Our twin boys have their own telly but we force them to watch films with us on the weekend.”

Sally also spoke about ageing and the impact this has had on her. She said: “Compared to the hassle you get when you’re a young woman, you don’t worry about walking past a building site or anything like that any more which is fabulous.”

She added: “A revolution is happening with women of my age with hormone replacement therapy and menopause. In my mum’s generation, you just shut up and got on with it.

”Now, there’s no one I’ve met around the same age as me who’s not mentioned it. We need to talk about it, so it’ll be easier for women coming after us.”

Sally will be stepping back into the shoes of Jean White for a festive instalment of The Madame Blanc Mysteries. The 120-minute festive episode sees the return of Jean White who’s invited to authenticate a newly-acquired museum treasure.

However, things take a rather dark turn when Jean discovers a ticking bomb hidden inside. The official synopsis says: “With just 90 minutes until detonation, the museum is sealed shut, the security guard is dead and the race is on.

“Jean and the gang must crack the code and defuse the bomb before time runs out. This is Jean’s most perilous challenge yet – can she save the day?”

The show announced on Instagram: “Some extra special news this morning, as we can reveal that this Christmas we’ll be heading to Sainte Victoire for the first ever feature-length episode of The Madame Blanc Mysteries. Jean White is back to what she does best – and let’s just say, she’s as excited as we are.“
