What to know about Bears vs. Eagles NFL Black Friday game: A matchup of first-place teams

The Athletic has live coverage of Bears vs. Eagles in the NFL Black Friday game.

A date dedicated to discount retail gets a full-price, top-of-the-catalog football game. The Chicago Bears and Philadelphia Eagles are both 8-3 and out in front of their respective divisions. They link up for a momentous Black Friday duel.

Each side has to be a bit surprised by how November is closing out. The Eagles are still in the mix for a first-round bye, but who foresaw such falloffs from Saquon Barkley and A.J. Brown? Meanwhile, the Bears are ahead of two preseason playoff favorites in the NFC North … and doing so with a rookie head coach.

So, what’s going to give? Maybe this episode will be remembered as “The Gang Sacks Caleb Williams.” Or maybe “The Original Beef of Chicagoland” wins at the line of scrimmage. Tune in to find out.

The good and bad with each team

Chicago

Good: Ben Johnson’s crew enters Friday with eight wins in its last nine tries. This team is showing a remarkable will in clutch spots. The Bears’ current four-game win streak has landed by a combined 14 points. Here are Chicago’s past four finishes:

  • Stunned the Cincinnati Bengals with that interrobang of a Colston Loveland 58-yard touchdown in the waning seconds in Week 9.
  • Came back against the New York Giants with Williams’ late scramble score in Week 10.
  • Walked off the Minnesota Vikings on a Cairo Santos field goal in Week 11.
  • Survived the Pittsburgh Steelers with a final defensive stand in its own territory in Week 12.

Wild. So, so wild. The Bears keep themselves in games thanks to a league-best plus-16 turnover differential. Williams has thrown 16 touchdowns to just four interceptions this season, with a league-high five game-winning drives. Hawking veteran safety Kevin Byard has five picks. Route-jumper Nahshon Wright also has five. Together, they’re tied for the NFL lead through a dozen weeks. Come in via O’Hare or Midway, but the secondary is a no-fly zone:

Bad: Clutch factor aside, Chicago needs to improve in the short field. The offense starts Week 13 at No. 16 in red zone conversions, and the defense has tumbled to 26th. Opposing rushers have gashed the Bears at 5.2 yards per attempt, third-worst mark in the league. And the front seven now takes the field without top linebacker Tremaine Edmunds (injured reserve, groin). Fellow LB T.J. Edwards (hand and hamstring) is also out; he hasn’t played since the Week 9 win.

Philadelphia

Good: The Eagles open the week with the fewest giveaways in the league, just six in 11 outings. Jalen Hurts, defending Super Bowl MVP, has thrown one singular INT compared to 17 passing scores and eight more goal-line plunges. Overall, this is a tremendous red zone group, ranked first in drives converted and third in drives defended. DT Jalen Carter, LB Zack Baun and CB Quinyon Mitchell are among the best defenders at their positions. When all else fails, hurl it up to DeVonta Smith, who will go supine to secure the catch:

Bad: As mentioned in the intro, Barkley and Brown are going through it right now. In 2024, Barkley ran for the rare 2,000-yard season (125.3 per game) on 5.8 yards per carry. In 2025, he’s down to 62.2 rushing yards per game on 3.7 yards per carry. Meanwhile, Brown is unhappy … and quite public about it. Lane Johnson, who has earned first- or second-team All-Pro honors every season since 2021, injured his foot two weeks ago and remains sidelined. Finally, Nick Sirianni has to regroup his locker room after the Eagles’ collapse to the rival Dallas Cowboys. They were outscored 17-0 in the second half of Week 12’s loss.

The NFL’s Black Friday history

This is the third year of Black Friday football. All three broadcasts have gone to Prime Video. The 2025 installment is different for two reasons. It’s the first with Prime global presentation, which helps those without an Amazon subscription service and fans overseas (additional language options for Spanish, French and Portuguese). It’s also the first to reach beyond one division: The Kansas City Chiefs beat the Las Vegas Raiders in an AFC West clash last time, and the Miami Dolphins topped the New York Jets in a 2023 AFC East meetup.

Prime’s usual “Thursday Night Football” crew is on tap for Black Friday. Al Michaels is the play-by-play voice, Kirk Herbstreit adds analysis and Kaylee Hartung provides sideline updates. Like TNF, there are over-the-air simulcasts in the selected markets, so viewers in Chicago and Philadelphia can get the game with a TV antenna.

The uniform pairings

Chicago will rock its road whites. And suitably, Philly brings out the all-black threads for Black Friday. It should make for an icy look as the sun sets late in the second half, especially with The Linc in blackout mode.
