According to the FBI, a person was captured on surveillance footage placing explosive devices in the Capitol Hill neighbourhood of Washington DC on 5 January, 2021, between 19:30 and 20:30 local time (12:30 to 01:10 GMT).
The buildings near where the pipe bombs were found the next day – one in an alley and another by a park bench – were home to the political offices of the Democratic National Committee and the Republican National Committee.
The suspect was wearing a grey hoodie, Nike sneakers, a face mask and gloves and carrying a backpack, according to US officials. The items the person allegedly left in the area included pipes, wires, kitchen timers, and homemade black powder.
“Although these bombs did not detonate, it is important to remember the suspect walked along residential and commercial areas in Capitol Hill just blocks from the US Capitol with viable pipe bombs that could have seriously injured or killed innocent bystanders. Moreover, the suspect may still pose a danger to the public or themselves,” the FBI said in 2024.
