There are some changes to the CFP format this year: While the top four seeds of the CFP will still earn a first-round bye, they are no longer reserved for the four highest-ranked conference champions. The CFP will instead go to straight seeding while allowing entry to the five highest-ranked conference champions.
Through the first 14 weeks of the 2025 season ― and all five rankings reveals ― Ohio State was ranked No. 1. That will no longer be the case after No. 2 Indiana (No. 2 in CFP) upset the Buckeyes 13-10 in the Big Ten Championship, giving the Hoosiers a historic win and the top seed of the playoff.
Texas Tech likely earned a first-round bye with a 34-7 win over BYU in the Big 12 Championship, while Georgia did the same with a dominant 28-7 win over Alabama in the SEC Championship game. It remains to be seen if the Crimson Tide will be included in the field with three losses.
In the ACC, Manny Diaz’s 8-5 Duke Blue Devils team shocked the college football world with a 27-20 overtime victory over No. 16 Virginia (No. 17 in CFP). He made an argument for his team to make the playoff, but it’s 19th-ranked Sun Belt champion James Madison (No. 25 in CFP) that stands to benefit most from the Blue Devils’ upset.
