VIDEO: Time running out to get your slice of $500M bread price-fixing deal

‘I think somebody should do a movie about this’: Friday is the deadline to register for a payout in the years-long case of an alleged conspiracy
by Canadian grocery giants to jack up the price of bread

The way grocery bills are skyrocketing these days, every dollar counts. All the more reason to register for your slice of the $500-million settlement linked to Canada’s now-infamous bread price-fixing scandal.

Anyone who bought bread sometime over the past 20 years — and really, who didn’t? — is entitled to some dough. The minimum payout is $50, but it could reach $100 or more depending on how many people sign up.

Claims must be submitted by this Friday at www.canadianbreadsettlement.ca.

How did we reach this point? Which grocery giants participated in an elaborate conspiracy to inflate prices and gouge customers? Could more cash be up for grabs down the road?

Jay Strosberg, the Windsor-based lawyer who launched the class-action lawsuit, was a recent guest on Village Media’s Closer Look podcast.

“What was shocking to me is how normalized it was,” he said, explaining how the scheme unfolded. “It’s just so brazen and out in the open.”

Strosberg said the evidence is still trickling out.

“There were secret meetings — secret meetings in either hotel rooms or lobby bars with people who have decision making authority,” he said. “And they’ll say: ‘Hey, listen, in three months we’re gonna do a price increase. We think it should be 10 cents. What do you think?’ It’s very cloak and dagger, but this stuff actually happens.”
