Transit service on the Scarborough busway will begin next September, Mayor Chow announced on Friday.

The four-kilometre designated bus corridor will run along the route of the former Scarborough RT from Kennedy Station to Ellesmere Station and will provide service to 120,000 people every week, Chow said at a news conference on Friday.

“Buses won’t sit in traffic and they’ll move faster,” Chow said at the conference.

A trip from Scarborough Centre Station to Kennedy Station is expected to take about 15 minutes once the project is implemented, according to a news release from the TTC announcing the busway.

“The people of Scarborough deserve reliable and efficient transit options,” Chow said in the release.

The busway was originally projected to open in 2027, the release said, but is now set to open months early, before the end of September 2026.

The total projected cost of the project is about $93.8 million, according to a July TTC board update on the busway.

Scarborough has been “deficient” in transit for a long time, said Coun. Michael Thompson (Scarborough Centre).

“We want to make it easier for you to travel, we want to reduce the time that it takes you to travel this community,” Thompson said. “So this is going to be a very big, positive investment in our community.”

Since the closure of the Scarborough RT in 2023, the TTC has been running replacement bus service. A subway extension into Scarborough from Kennedy Station, is also in the works according Metrolinx’s website.
