For most of us, our home is the place where we feel safest, but 9 out of 10 fire deaths in the U.S. happen inside a house.
And the risk of deadly fires goes up during the holiday season.
Sher Grogg, of Delaware, knows the danger all too well.
Ten years ago, she lost six family members in a Christmas tree fire.
“They had left their tree lights on when they went to bed, and there was an electrical problem,” Grogg said. “And at 3:29 in the morning, the smoke detectors all went off. But by 3:31, there were flames shooting through the roof.”
Grogg’s brother, his wife and four of the couple’s young grandchildren died that night.
Grogg now works with Common Voices, a fire safety advocacy group, to warn others.
“Never ever, ever leave your tree lights on when the tree is unattended,” Grogg said.
Whether you have a real or artificial Christmas tree, it is critical you turn off the lights off before bed and when you leave the house.
Experts recommend filling your tree stand with water daily, keeping your Christmas tree at least three feet from heat sources, and disposing of it within 30 days or by January 2, whichever comes first.
Other tips include using holiday lights listed by a qualified testing laboratory, replacing worn cords or loose bulb connections, and following manufacturer instructions for the number of strands to connect.
Also be aware that some lights are rated only for indoor or outdoor use, not both.
Candles also pose a risk. Blow them out before leaving a room and keep them away from curtains, flammable materials, pets and children.
Finally, install and test smoke alarms on every level of your home. Working smoke alarms and sprinkler systems make you 88% more likely to survive a fire.
