NYPD searching for two men linked to shooting of 6 teens in Brooklyn outside event space

EAST NEW YORK, Brooklyn (WABC) — A teenager of a well-known anti-violence activist family was among 6 teenagers who were injured in a mass shooting over the weekend in Brooklyn.

Surveillance video shows the chaos early Sunday morning as two gunmen opened fire into a crowd in front of an event space, injuring 6 teenagers.

The family of a 15-year-old victim exclusively spoke to Eyewitness News and said the teen was standing outside waiting for an Uber after the party when she was struck. She comes from a well-known family of anti-gun violence advocates for over 20 years in Brooklyn.

“It’s kind of hard you know, she’s questioning why her, why did this happen?” the victim’s father, Dawud Mann, said.

The mass shooting that happened in Cypress Hills is one that two brothers, as violence interrupters for two decades, have found themselves in on any given weekend night.

But this time it was much different.

“This is exactly what I’ve been working against. This is the first time it has actually struck a member of my direct family,” the victim’s uncle, A.T. Mitchell, said.

The 15-year-old niece of Mitchell, who was appointed in 2022 as the city’s first gun violence czar, is recovering at Brookdale Hospital.

She is one of 6 teenagers shot after leaving a sweet sixteen party at a banquet hall on Saturday night in Brooklyn.

The NYPD is searching for two men, one appeared to have a gun in his waist, according to surveillance video.

Surveillance video also shows the two men in hoodies walking to the corner of Atlantic Avenue and Warwick Street, opening fire and retreating back down Warwick.

Investigators found more than 21 shell casings littering the intersection.

“This is a lot for me because I feel like a parent, I feel like a father that wants to protect his daughter to go to any length to make sure that she’s alright and safe,” Mann said.

The teen was shot multiple times and underwent surgery. Her father said she was just accepted to the dance team on Saturday morning before the shooting. She is expected to make a recovery.

The other victims have non-life-threatening injuries.

The search for the shooters is ongoing.

Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-577-TIPS.
