Snowplow safety reminders following heavy snowfall

As winter is set to bring more heavy snowfall across the province, the Saskatchewan Ministry of Highways is reminding motorists to stay safe when encountering snowplows on the roads.

Environment Canada is forecasting snow and gusty winds for southwest Saskatchewan, with totals expected to accumulate throughout the day up to 20 centimetres. Drivers are being warned that reduced visibility and slippery conditions may make travel challenging, especially on rural highways and secondary roads.

Dan Palmer with the Ministry of Highways is encouraging drivers to maintain safe following distances when travelling near snowplows.

“Stay back, give them some space and give them some room,” Palmer said. “They’re out there clearing the highway for all motorists, and we want everyone to get home safely.”

Palmer also reminded drivers that plows will stop every 10 to 15 kilometres when it is safe to do so.

He added that the Highway Hotline is an important resource when planning travel during winter conditions.

“Check it before you head out for the latest available road conditions,” Palmer said. “See what’s on the highway ahead of you, whether it’s travel not recommended or a road closure. This is Saskatchewan — weather can change on a dime — and we want everyone to get home safely.”

Motorists can report incidents or emergencies by visiting the Highway Hotline website.
