Liverpool striker Alexander Isak undergoes surgery for leg fracture, expected to miss multiple months

Liverpool have confirmed that striker Alexander Isak underwent surgery today on the fractured leg he suffered in Saturday’s 2-1 win over Tottenham Hotspur.

There is no set timescale for his recovery but he’s expected to be sidelined for a few months.

The Athletic reported on Sunday that Liverpool feared Isak had sustained a suspected broken leg in the win at Spurs.

The 26-year-old was injured in the act of opening the scoring with a smart finish, 11 minutes after his introduction at the interval. Having finished smartly from Florian Wirtz’s pass, Isak was brought down awkwardly by a sliding challenge from Spurs defender Micky van de Ven and unable to celebrate with his teammates.

Results of an MRI scan the following day confirmed that he had sustained a broken leg and he had surgery on the injury on Monday.

Liverpool said in a statement that “an operation was completed today on an ankle injury that included a fibula fracture.” The Sweden international will begin his rehabilitation at the club’s Kirkby training centre.

Isak’s absence is a huge blow to both Liverpool and the £125million signing, who scored for only the second time in the Premier League in north London since his record-breaking move from Newcastle United in the summer.

Isak has started six top-flight games for Liverpool and three times in the Champions League, with fellow summer signing Hugo Ekitike – who scored the winner against nine-man Spurs – settling quicker at Anfield.
