Ole Miss quarterback Trinidad Chambliss, perhaps the surprise of the SEC this past season has given the Rebels a date with Georgia in the Sugar Bowl (Jan. 1, 7 p.m., ESPN) and apparently, he wants more.
According to ESPN, the Ole Miss QB is applying for a sixth season of eligibility but there may be some hurdles in the way.
After transferring from Ferris State (MI) of Division II, wrapped up his fifth season of college with Ole Miss, Chambliss applied for a sixth season in November. If given a sixth season, Chambliss would be faced interesting decisions.
A few options may be at hand, a return to Ole Miss, entering the portal and a possible reunion with former head coach Lane Kiffin at LSU.
But could a legal issue be at hand? Recently, Chambliss brought in Tom Mars to represent him.
Writing in a letter that if not given another season, Mars stresses urgency and that a denial would have Chambliss “suffer irreparable harm”.
The waiver Chambliss is looking for stems from 2022 when he played in no games at Ferris State after sitting out in 2021 with a traditional redshirt season. In 2022 he dealt with medical issues that led to his tonsil being removed.
The task is now for Ole Miss to prove Chambliss was unable to participate in games. In the seven-page letter to the NCAA, Mars includes information from Chambliss’ doctor that includes his medical records.
“Given the chronicity and documented impact of his symptoms, it is medically reasonable to conclude that chronic tonsillitis and its related complications limited his ability to participate consistently in high-intensity collegiate athletics during the 2022 season,” Doctor Anthony Howard said in a statement.
“These health issues affected his availability and performance during conditioning, practice, and game preparation. … His chronic tonsillitis represents a medically valid basis for hardship consideration as his condition rendered him incapacitated and unable to participate in the 2022 season.”
The timing of this issue also presents more chaos as Chambliss and Ole Miss face Georgia a day before the portal opens on Jan. 2.
