A man was seen walking along the M4 motorway last night after a crash that left a vehicle on its roof.

Wiltshire Police said it received calls reporting a Range Rover Evoque being driven dangerously at around 9pm.

The vehicle was then involved in a crash with another vehicle, which flipped onto its roof, between Membury Services and J15.

The driver of the Range Rover is understood to have left the scene. Calls then came in reporting sightings of a man walking along the hard shoulder of the M4, towards the junction.

Wiltshire Police deployed armed units and Police Dog Conan to search for the man.

The suspect was tracked from the crash and found by police, who arrested him on suspicion of multiple offences.

He was arrested on suspicion of drink driving, drug driving, driving whilst disqualified, failing to stop after a road accident and being a pedestrian on a carriageway.

He was taken to hospital as a precaution and has been released on police bail.

A spokesperson for Wiltshire Police said: “A 42-year-old man has been arrested for multiple driving offences following a road traffic collision on the M4 last night (Monday).

“At around 9pm, we received several calls reporting a Range Rover Evoque being driven dangerously, before it was involved in a collision with another vehicle between Membury Services and Junction 15, which flipped onto its roof.

“The driver of the Range Rover left the scene, and our call centre then received further reports of a man walking along the hard shoulder towards Junction 15.

“Through teamwork between the Roads Policing Unit, Armed Response, and the dog team—including Police Dog Conan—the driver was tracked from the scene and arrested on suspicion of drink driving, drug driving, driving while disqualified, failing to stop after a road accident, and being a pedestrian on a carriageway.

“He was taken to hospital as a precaution and has since been released on police bail.”

The crash closed two lanes at the time but the motorway had fully reopened by around 11pm.
