A thrilling title race is unravelling in Portugal, where the country’s big three teams, Porto, Sporting and Benfica, started the weekend separated by just eight points.
Benfica find themselves at the bottom of that mini-league but they are improving week on week under Jose Mourinho and have won their last four games to nil.
The Eagles have also picked up the pace in Europe, winning their last two Champions League games after losing each of their last four, and striker Vangelis Pavlidis’s run of nine goals in ten club appearances just underlines how dangerous they are.
The gulf between the big three and everybody else in Portugal is substantial and that should be underlined on Sunday when Mourinho’s men head to Braga.
The hosts are enjoying a solid season but still find themselves ten points behind Benfica, who should have enough to make it seven straight away wins.
