Border Patrol commander says Honduran woman ran red light, struck government vehicle in Slidell

SLIDELL, La. (WVUE) – The commander of the Trump administration’s Border Patrol immigration crackdown said in a social media post Saturday (Dec. 27) that a government vehicle was struck in Slidell by a Honduran woman driving in the United States illegally.

“This blooper is one for the books!” Border Patrol commander Gregory Bovino wrote in a Facebook post. “A driver ran a red light in Slidell, LA and accidentally crashed into a vehicle used by Operation Catahoula Crunch. It turns out she was an illegal alien from Honduras.

“… No injuries were reported, but she was taken into custody. Unlucky for her. Lucky for us.”

Slidell Police released additional information about the crash on Facebook.

The investigation determined that a 2006 Acura MDX, driven by 43-year-old Reyna Funez, was stopped at a red light on the off-ramp of Interstate 12. Funez proceeded to turn right on red and failed to yield to a 2021 Ford Expedition traveling north on Airport Road. The driver of the Ford Expedition attempted to swerve to avoid the collision but was unable to do so.

Officers determined that Funez was at fault for the crash due to a red-light violation and a failure to yield. She also did not have a valid driver’s license.

The 2021 Ford Expedition was registered to the United States Government and was being operated by federal agents participating in “Operation Catahoula Crunch.” Officers determined that Funez was not a legal resident of the United States, and she was taken into custody by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
