2 people seriously injured in house fire in Maspeth, Queens; firefighters battle flames in Springfield Gardens

QUEENS (WABC) — Firefighters worked to extinguish massive flames after two separate fires broke out in Queens overnight.

At least two people were seriously injured after flames tore through a home on 57th Road in Maspeth just before 3 a.m. on Sunday.

Video captures firefighters on scene as heavy flames shot out and thick smoke billowed from the structure.

Over 140 firefighters and EMS personnel responded to battle the fire. The blaze was put under control around 4:30 a.m.

The Red Cross says it is currently assisting at least nine adults and a child who were impacted by the fire.

Separately, another fire broke out at a two-story building on Guy R Brewer Boulevard in Springfield Gardens around midnight.

Officials say the fire started on the second floor of the building, which is near John F. Kennedy International Airport. The building is believed to be unoccupied, according to the FDNY.

“Members initiated an aggressive interior attack, but the fire was extending rapidly,” Deputy Assistant Chief Tim Keenan said. “It got into the walls and the cockloft, and eventually we had fire through the roof.”

Nearly 200 first responders aided in the emergency response. The FDNY says it took over three hours to get the fire under control.

Authorities are now trying to determine what caused the two fires.
