Bears bracing for potential raid of Ben Johnson’s coaching staff

The Chicago Bears have found impressive success under first-year head coach Ben Johnson, who has his team sitting at 11-4, one win away from the NFC North title and in contention for the No. 1 seed in the NFC. While Johnson has been crucial in Chicago’s success, he hasn’t done it alone.

Johnson assembled an impressive coaching staff that’s a mixture of young, up-and-coming guys and experienced veterans who have all contributed to the Bears’ impressive turnaround. That includes veteran defensive coordinator Dennis Allen and up-and-coming offensive coordinator Declan Doyle.

According to CBS Sports’ Jonathan Jones, the Bears are bracing for Johnson’s coaching staff to be “raided” this offseason. Jones specifically mentioned Doyle, defensive backs coach Al Harris, running backs coach Eric Bieniemy, quarterbacks coach J.T. Barrett and passing game coordinator Press Taylor.

One thing Jones mentioned is that league source believe Detroit Lions head coach Dan Campbell will be looking for a new offensive coordinator this offseason, and Jones believes Campbell might look to poach from Johnson’s staff.

The great thing about having an offensive-minded head coach in Johnson is that Chicago doesn’t have to worry about losing their play caller. And considering Allen has already been a head coach on two separate occasions, and been fired both times, there’s no danger of him being a threat to depart as defensive coordinator.

When assistant coaches are being targeted by other teams, it’s usually an indication that your team is having a successful season. If the Bears do lose any of their assistants, the hope is Johnson can find the next great up-and-coming talent.
