Man shot, killed by officers in Vancouver; Police say he pointed gun at them

VANCOUVER Wash. (KPTV) – A man was shot and killed by officers responding to a disturbance at a Vancouver home late Saturday night, according to police.

Officers with the Vancouver Police Department were sent to a home on Northeast 46th Street shortly before midnight after the report of a man pointing a gun at a woman inside the house. According to police, the 911 caller said the man had fired “at least one round.”

When police arrived, they say the man pointed the gun at them. Two VPD officers fired, hitting the man. He was rushed to the hospital, but died on the way.

The woman living at the home told reporters the man was her husband and that he was experiencing a mental health episode.

She said she didn’t feel unsafe and described him as a good man. She hopes body camera footage, which has not been released, will provide clarity about the shooting.

Neighbors in the typically quiet Vancouver neighborhood said they woke to gunfire.

“In the middle of the night, I heard multiple gunshots ring pretty loud from my room,” J.D. Lofgren said. “Right afterwards, multiple sirens.”

Lofgren said he initially hoped the sounds were fireworks.

“I feel like this neighborhood is pretty safe, it’s kind of quiet. It was definitely a little scary,” Lofgren said.

The two officers who fired their guns, and a third witnessing officer, have all been placed on leave per protocol.

Also, per protocol, the Washington State Office of Independent Investigations is taking over the case.

No further information is being released by authorities at this time.
