Tom Izzo ‘really proud’ of Jeremy Fears, despite shooting woes vs Duke
Michigan State basketball coach Tom Izzo says he’s really proud of Jeremy Fears Jr., despite finishing 0-for-10 on field goals vs Duke.
After a brief Christmas break (coach Tom Izzo said his team “might” get one day off with all the work they needed) Michigan State basketball is back in action.
The Spartans survived a small scare against Oakland in their final game before a nine-day break leading up to their final nonconference game of the season against Cornell at the Breslin Center in East Lansing on Monday, Dec. 29.
The game is set to tipoff at 7 p.m. on FS1.
By nearly all measures, it’s been a successful first 12 games of the season for the Spartans. They notched key victories against Arkansas, Kentucky and North Carolina and the only loss came to the Duke Blue Devils.
Although one of the team’s biggest weaknesses early, outside shooting, has drastically improved, there are other areas that Izzo has been adamant there are still areas his team needs to fix.
Cornell might be one of the last opportunities to do so, as the Spartans get right back to the grind on Friday, Jan. 2 when they travel to Nebraska to face the undefeated Cornhuskers on the road.

Michigan State vs Cornell prediction
Andrew Birkle, Detroit Free Press: After a nine-day break, the Spartans are likely to be a bit rusty out of the gate, and Izzo has been determined to fiddle with lineups before the real meat-grinder of MSU’s schedule begins. It all leads to a slow start before the Spartans come out roaring in the second half for a comfortable victory to end the nonconference slate on a winning note with plenty for Izzo to critique. Just how he likes it. The pick: MSU 86, Cornell 69.
