Gusty Santa Ana winds bring downed trees, damage to cities across Southern California

Just days after a Christmas downpour, the Santa Ana winds are gusting in parts of Southern California, causing damage and downed trees for some.
The Santa Ana winds were violent and destructive on Monday. In Moorpark, California Highway Patrol shut down part of SR-118 after a tree fell into power lines.
In Orange County, a palm tree fell on top of a car with two women inside. One of the women was injured, through further details on her condition were not immediately available.
“We were stopped at a stoplight. We were maybe five or six cars behind the light, and all of a sudden, we were starting to go, and the tree fell right on top of us from the right-hand side, from the hotel side,” one of the women said.
In Buena Park, a canopy lifted out of someone’s backyard and got caught in the power lines. The fire department responded to the scene.
“If you see anything caught up in the power lines, move inside,” said Quinn Collison with Orange County Fire. “Do your due diligence, call 911.”
In Porter Ranch, the winds knocked trash bins over, and they slid down the street. Video also shows shopping carts rolling through parking lots.
Another video shows a tree that came crashing down in Tarzana.
Surveillance video shows a tree crashing down on a home in Sylmar on Monday morning. The tree’s large branches caused extensive damage to the home. Some crashed all the way through the bedroom ceiling.
The homeowners said the tree nearly hit their son, who was sleeping at the time. Fortunately, there are no reports of anyone being seriously hurt.
The National Weather Service forecasts 25-to-40 mph winds, gusting up to 60 mph in SoCal, including parts of the San Gabriel and Santa Monica mountains.
“It’s been super windy. On the freeway, it blows your car across the road. So it’s been kind of, it’s been a little treacherous out there. A lot of debris on the freeway,” said Justin Lapresle from Northridge.
Wind advisories and warnings that were in effect have since expired, but drivers are still encouraged to be careful on the road.
