Highway 11 closed across northern Ontario due to severe winter weather

Northern Ontarians are facing major travel disruptions after a powerful winter storm prompted the shutdown of a large section of Highway 11 between North Bay and Nipigon

Highway 11 has been closed for hundreds of kilometres across northern Ontario due to severe winter weather, according to Ontario 511.

The closure stretches from North Bay to Nipigon, cutting off a major transportation corridor through much of the region as snow squalls and blowing snow create hazardous driving conditions.

Ontario 511, the province’s official road information service, shows multiple extended closures along Highway 11, with visibility reduced to near-zero in some areas and snow-covered road surfaces making travel unsafe.

The highway closure spans over nearly 900 kilometres, affecting communities across northeastern and northwestern Ontario and disrupting long-distance travel and commercial traffic.

Environment Canada has issued snow squall warnings and winter weather advisories for large portions of northern Ontario, warning motorists of rapidly deteriorating conditions, strong winds and sudden whiteout conditions.

Drivers are being advised to avoid travel and to check conditions through Ontario 511 before heading out. No timeline has been provided for when the highway may reopen.
