NEW YORK (WABC) — We end this year with the MTA heroes behind the beloved MetroCard.
These heroes make up the team known as the High Production Encoding Machine Unit, employees responsible for encoding every MetroCard, for every program used in the subway and bus system, from student cards to reduced fare cards.
Many of them with more than 25 years of experience. One employee has 44 years on the job!
The MetroCard sunsets on New Year’s Eve with no more sales of the iconic piece of plastic.
More than 3 billion MetroCards have been encoded since inception.
