Dallas Cowboys waive cornerback Trevon Diggs

Trevon Diggs entered the Cowboys’ universe as a soft-spoken, second-round pick from college football power Alabama in 2020.
Diggs’ 5-year-old son at the time, Aaiden Diggs, became popular with football fans for his playful cheering of his dad’s team on the HBO series “Hard Knocks.”
In one episode, Aaiden Diggs was getting ice cream with his dad when Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott walked in. Aaiden, wearing a Prescott jersey, confused the quarterback with Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes.
It was a cute scene that made Diggs one of the Cowboys’ more popular players, along with his son, who now has his own Instagram account.

On Tuesday afternoon, Diggs’ time with the Cowboys ended. The team placed him on waivers, ending six seasons with the club and a career where he led the NFL in interceptions one season, was named to two Pro Bowls and one All-Pro team.
The Cowboys moving on from Diggs isn’t a surprise considering what has occurred over the past year.
Diggs’ release was a result of several things that occurred during the 2025 season, ranging from performance to off-the-field issues, such as being a continuous repeat offender on rules violations from meetings to rehab work, two people with knowledge of the move confirmed to The Dallas Morning News.
In one example, Diggs didn’t fly back to Texas with the Cowboys after the Christmas Day game against the Commanders in Landover, Md., a person with knowledge of the incident told The News. He was the only player not to fly back with the team.
Diggs, 27, appeared in eight games this season in what has been a tumultuous few months for the former All-Pro. Diggs missed two months with knee soreness/swelling and a concussion he suffered at his home.
After undergoing knee surgery in the offseason, the Cowboys deducted $500,000 from Diggs’ base salary because he did not do enough of his contractually required rehab work with the team’s athletic staff over the summer.
Diggs finished his time with the Cowboys with 20 career interceptions. He was not credited with a pass breakup or interception this season.
The Cowboys signed Diggs to a massive five-year, $97 million extension in 2023. He played in only 21 games and had three interceptions after signing it. Diggs’ cap hit for 2026 will be reduced from $18.4 million to $5.9 million in dead money, a savings of $12.5 million.
Diggs will now pass through the waiver claim process. If he goes unclaimed, he will become a free agent.
He will then have an opportunity to sign with a possible playoff team.
The Cowboys’ other starting cornerback, DaRon Bland, was recently placed on injured reserve with a foot injury. That leaves Shavon Revel, Trikweze Bridges, Caelen Carson, Reddy Steward and Corey Ballentine on the active roster for Sunday’s season finale against the NY Giants. Zion Childress is on the practice squad.
From Luka Doncic to Micah Parsons, with Jerry Jones, as always, right in the middle, there was no shortage of wild Dallas sports stories in 2025.
