Packers Discussion: Trevon Diggs is available

I had some things that needed addressing earlier today, so thank you to Mr. Cheezl for making a Feed post about the Trevon Diggs situation, but let’s make this a full post. Diggs, a 2021 All-Pro and two-time Pro Bowl cornerback, has been made available after the Dallas Cowboys waived him on Tuesday.
Here’s what you need to know:
First of all, he’s a ballhawk. He initially enrolled at Alabama as a receiver but ended up converting to outside cornerback with the Crimson Tide. Depending on who you talk to and their opinion on ball production, Diggs has been a shaky cornerback at the NFL level.
A lot of the value that Diggs brought to the Cowboys was his ability to use his 6’2” frame to force interceptions, which he had 11 of in 2021 when he led the NFL. He’s never been the type of defensive back to just erase his assignment because of tight coverage. Over the last four years, though, he’s only averaged 1.5 interceptions a year.
Below is a chart that highlights the Green Bay Packers’ most-played outside cornerbacks and also Diggs in terms of yards allowed per coverage snap this year (via NFL Pro):
So, technically, Diggs has been about as average as the rest of the Packers’ cornerbacks this season.
With that being said, Nate Hobbs went down with an injury against the Baltimore Ravens and didn’t return to action, while Kamal Hadden went on the injured reserve after the game. Because of that, the Packers called up two practice squad cornerbacks to their active roster on Tuesday.
It would be a short turnaround to add Diggs to the 2025 squad and get him ready for the playoffs, but considering their lack of plays on the ball and injuries at the position, it doesn’t seem out of the question that the team could add him.
Financially, all of Diggs’ guarantees, including injury guarantees, have already expired. So the Packers wouldn’t owe him anything in 2026 for adding him for one week of the 2025 regular season and the postseason. The cost on the cap to add Diggs would be half a million for his Week 18 check and potentially around $60,000 if they played him in Week 18, because of his per-game roster bonus. The team would almost certainly make him a cap casualty, or at minimum rework his contract, in 2026, considering that he’s due $14.5 million in salary alone next year.
Because it’s after the trade deadline, even veterans like Diggs are subject to waivers, meaning that any team below the Packers in the league-wide standings would be awarded Diggs if both that team and Green Bay made a claim on Diggs.
Below is the current waiver order, according to ESPN (teams in the playoff race are bolded):
- Raiders
- Giants
- Cardinals
- Jets
- Titans
- Commanders
- Browns
- Saitns
- Chiefs
- Bengals
- Falcons
- Buccaneers
- Dolphins
- Cowboys
- Ravens
- Lions
- Vikings
- Colts
- Panthers
- Steelers
- Packers
- Bills
- Chargers
- Rams
- Texans
- Eagles
- Bears
- 49ers
- Jaguars
- Patriots
- Seahawks
- Broncos
Why do playoff teams matter? Because Diggs is probably going to hit the open market in 2026 anyway, considering his contract. The only teams still in playoff contention who are ahead of the Packers in the waiver priority are the Buccaneers, Ravens, Panthers and Steelers. None of them has clinched a playoff spot, unlike Green Bay.
Here’s another factor in all of this:
Diggs has hired David Mulugheta of Athletes First as his agent since being waived. The Packers have strong ties to Athletes First (a major agency), which represents pass-rusher Micah Parsons, quarterback Jordan Love, head coach Matt LaFleur, safety Xavier McKinney, former quarterback Aaron Rodgers and former pass-rusher Clay Matthews III. Mulugheta personally represents Parsons, Love, McKinney, backup quarterback Malik Willis and defensive end Kingsley Enagbare.
Apparently, the root of the Cowboys release stems from Diggs staying home in Washington after Christmas.
So, do you want the team to add him or not? Voice your opinion in the comment section.
