Synopsis:
In Aziz Ansari’s directorial debut, GOOD FORTUNE, a well-meaning but rather inept angel named Gabriel (Keanu Reeves) observes a struggling gig worker, Arj (Aziz Ansari), who is barely making ends meet in Los Angeles, and intervenes to show him that money can’t solve all his problems. Gabriel swaps Arj’s life with a wealthy venture capitalist, Jeff (Seth Rogen), but the plan backfires when Arj is convinced his newfound wealth has, in fact, solved all his problems. As Arj refuses to switch back, Jeff is left without his fortune, Gabriel loses his wings, and all three are forced to confront what it truly means to be human.
‘Good Fortune’ follows struggling gig worker Arj who struggles every day to get by living in Los Angeles, working any random delivery service job and other mediocre opportunity available to survive while living in his car. But when a low-level angel by the name of Gabriel believes Arj to be a lost soul, he tries to intervene even when he shouldn’t. Convinced that Arj will appreciate his life more if he sees what the other end is like, Gabriel switches Arj’s life with a wealthy venture capitalist named Jeff to help him appreciate what he has. But when Arj finds happiness and a sense of peace in his taste of the rich life, things become problematic for all three once Arj decides he has no desire to go back.
Written and directed by Aziz Ansari who does a fantastic job at the helm of ‘Good Fortune’ guiding along his directorial debut with heart, humor and care. The film’s cast includes Seth Rogen (TV’s The Studio), Aziz Ansari (TV’s Master of None), Keke Palmer (One of Them Days), Sandra Oh (TV’s Killing Eve) and Keanu Reeves (John Wick), with each offering capable and rewarding performances in their respective roles which help the film to work so smoothly, and Reeves often steals many of the scenes he occupies with his hilariously awkward portrayal of the angel Gabriel.
‘Good Fortune’ is a smart, fun and funny look at life from different perspectives that’s loaded with humor, heart and plenty of amusing twists and turns along the way. It has just about everything a great comedy should from characters that you enjoy watching and care about, with character growth, an exploration of different types of lives and the drastic differences and similarities between them, plus of course what is arguably the most important factor of all; plenty of laugh out loud moments sprinkled throughout. It will warm your heart while keeping you smiling and laughing all the while and it all comes together into one of the better comedies in recent memory.
Aziz Ansari delivers an impressive directorial debut with ‘Good Fortune’ after the issues that plagued his intended first film and ‘Good Fortune’ is an absolute joy to experience thanks to a moving, heartfelt and truly funny tale and a terrific cast of talented stars to back it up including Keanu Reeves, Seth Rogen, Keke Palmer and of course Ansari himself who each contribute nicely and help to make the film work as splendidly as it does, not to mention retaining the heart and beauty among the laughs without causing it all to be a bit too sappy or over the top. If you’re looking for a solid comedy that will leave you feeling good and also have you wanting to revisit it in the foreseeable future, then ‘Good Fortune’ should be just the ticket.
Overall, ‘Good Fortune’ is a fantastic directorial debut from Aziz Ansari that’s filled with humor, heart and a lot of fun, as well as a nicely crafted story that has a lot to offer beyond the laughs and doesn’t just rely on cheap, crass humor like many R-rated comedy films these days (not that that’s always a negative necessarily). It provides a rewarding and heartfelt ride that’s as beautiful and relatable at times as it is funny; with an utterly hilarious performance by Reeves that alone makes it well worth a watch. ‘Good Fortune’ is highly recommended for anyone that’s either already looking forward to it or mildly intrigued. It should have no trouble proving worthy of your time and the price of a rental to give a whirl at the very least for fans of Ansari, the key cast and anyone at all interested.
