Who is Lucas Carneiro? Ole Miss kicker sets Sugar Bowl field goal record

NEW ORLEANS − Ole Miss football kicker Lucas Carneiro has broken a Sugar Bowl record twice already in the first quarter Jan. 1.
Carneiro kicked a 55-yard field goal in the first quarter of the game against Georgia (12-1). It was his career long, and a Sugar Bowl record. The previous record was a 53-yard kick from Oklahoma’s John Carroll in 1972.
The Rebels (12-1) have a 6-0 lead after Carneiro made a 56-yarder to break his own record with 2:13 remaining in the first quarter.
Carneiro is a junior from Cornelius, North Carolina. He transferred to Ole Miss from Western Kentucky before the 2025 season. Carneiro is 25-for-28 on field goals for the Rebels. His previous career long was 54 yards.
The game is a quarterfinals matchup in the CFP. The 2025 season is Ole Miss’ first time playing in the CFP. The winner of the game will face No. 10 Miami in the Fiesta Bowl to play for a spot in the national championship game.
