Cary mobile home residents face displacement as Chatham Estates sells for redevelopment :: WRAL.com

A Cary couple is among more than 100 families being forced to leave their neighborhood after plans to sell the property were announced.
On Monday, residents in the Chatham Estates mobile home park community were told they have six months to vacate, leaving many uncertain about what lies ahead.
The mobile home community has been tucked away off Maynard Road for decades. It has been a home to Steve and Ann Curlee since 1988.
“It’s a lot of unanswered questions,” Ann Curlee said.
The thought of leaving is something she said is too much to bear.
“Not knowing where we’ll be going and whether we’re going to fit into it or not,” she continued.
The couple, along with their 143 neighbors, received a letter from owner Curtis Westbrook saying a buyer is expected to close on the property in mid-2026, with plans to redevelop it.
An information brief from the Town of Cary details a developer’s proposal to build 330 multifamily units and 97 townhouses.
It’s an option many people in Chatham Estates tell WRAL News they won’t be able to afford.
The Curlees said they are hoping to be approved to move into a nearby senior living community. If not, they’d have to move to Johnston County.
“I need to stay around where I have my doctor or have an ambulance get to me as fast as I can,” Ann Curlee said.
In Westbrook’s letter, he said “age and health” played a role in the decision to sell the property.
“I hope he gets along as good as he can, and I don’t blame him, but I hate to have to move,” Ann Curlee said.
Cary non-profit, NeighborUp, is helping neighbors find other housing options, resources, and assistance with moving expenses. Every mobile home and personal property must be removed by Tuesday, June 30.
