According to a 2006 Hindustan Times report, Shah Bano’s husband, Mohd. Ahmed Khan passed away on April 4, 2006. He was 94 when he left for the heavenly abode. He died in Indore and had a high fever before passing away. Mohd. Ahmed married twice. In a past interview with The Quint, Shah Bano’s youngest son, Jameel Ahmad, opened up about his father’s two marriages and why he decided to divorce her. He was quoted as saying:
“My father got married twice, and my mother, Shah Bano, was his first wife. The second wife of my father was 14 years younger than him. Both ladies used to fight endlessly over trivial issues. That was the reason why my father decided to divorce my mother.”

Shah Bano knocked at the door of the Supreme Court of India, when she was abandoned by her husband, Mohd. Ahmed Khan. The legal case played a key role in shaping the Muslim personal law. In a 2016 interview with The Indian Express, Siddiqua Ahmed, daughter of Shah Bano shared a rare glimpse of the tussle between Shah Bano and Mohd. Ahmed Khan. She shared that after losing the case to Shah Bano, Ahmed left his profession. For the uninitiated, Shah Bano won the case against her husband in 1985. Siddiqua Ahmed was quoted as saying:
“My mother was a simple woman, but circumstances made her tough. She was so angry with my father that she warned him, ‘Vakil saab, if I go to court, you will never be able to wear your black coat again’. He lost the case and never wore his coat again.”

For those unaware, Mohd. Ahmed Khan had one son, Zafar Khan and four daughters from his second marriage. However, he was already a father to five children from his previous marriage to Shah Bano. In the same interview, Shah Bano’s youngest son, Jameel Ahmad, revealed how her father changed after his second marriage. He neglected his five children, whom he shared with Shah Bano. Jameel highlighted how the divorce took a toll on his mother. He added that after the separation, Shah Bano got high pressure and frequently got ill. He was quoted as saying:
“My mother was a simple woman. She loved to remain inside the house. She was devastated after she was divorced at the age of 60 in 1979. She developed high blood pressure and frequently fell ill. My father became a different man after marrying for the second time. He used to treat his five children from his first wife with contempt.”
Further in the interview, Jameel revealed that his father was not keen to provide maintenance to his mother, Shah Bano. Thus, the Muslim women found inner strength and approached the local court. Jameel mentioned that after fighting a legal battle for seven years, his mother, Shah Bano, finally won the case.
