LSU Falls to Vanderbilt, 65-61 – LSU

BATON ROUGE, La. – The fifth-ranked LSU women’s basketball team fell to the 12th-ranked Vanderbilt, 65-61, on Sunday evening inside the Memorial Gymnasium.
The Tigers are back in action on Thursday, Jan. 8 to face Georgia. The game will tip off at 5:30 p.m. CT inside the Stegeman Coliseum in Athens, Georgia.
With the loss, LSU falls to 14-2 overall, while Vanderbilt improves to 15-0 on the season.
After a rocky start, LSU ramped up its defense to take the lead into the half, 28-22. The Tigers shot 42.9 percent on 12-of-28 shots and drained two treys. The Commodores shot 7-of-27 (25.9%) and also knocked down two three-pointers. LSU tallied 24 rebounds to Vanderbilt’s 12.
In the second half, the contest was tight throughout as they traded leads in the final minutes. Vanderbilt sealed the victory with Mikayla Blakes back-to-back layups and a free throw. LSU and Vanderbilt made 13-of-30 (43.3%) field goals; however, Vanderbilt had eight treys to LSU’s one. The Commodores outscored the Tigers 43-33.
Jada Richard and MiLaysia Fulwiley led the Tigers with 13 points. Richard shot 5-of-10 and Fulwiley shot 6-of-13. Mikaylah Williams had 12 points while ZaKiyah Johnson earned 10.
The Commodores were led by Mikayla Blakes with 32 points, 11 points in the first quarter and 15 points in the fourth. She shot 10-of-25 from the field, 9-of-12 from the free throw line and three treys.
