As many major Hollywood titles depart various streaming homes in the U.S., so too are some of your favorites making exits in the UK. Most recently, we’ve learned that Netflix is losing one of the greatest sci-fi animations as 2026 begins, alongside a bunch of other science fiction and fantasy productions. The animated series is none other than Rick and Morty, Adult Swim’s Emmy-winning sitcom, which has been in existence since December 2, 2013.
As of January 1, 2026, Seasons 1–7 of Rick and Morty are no longer available to stream on Netflix UK, which comes just a few months after Season 8 wrapped. Created by Justin Roiland and Dan Harmon, the adult animation last aired on July 27, 2025, with its eighth season premiering two months earlier, on May 25. Since its debut over ten years ago, critics have always approved of every season, with the lowest Tomatometer score on Rotten Tomatoes being 77% for Season 7 and the highest being Season 1’s 97%.
Speaking of the Emmys, Rick and Morty has been nominated for three Primetime Emmy Awards for Outstanding Animated Program, winning in 2018 and 2020. It has also been the most-viewed adult television comedy a few times, with its popularity surging over the years, making it a hundred-million-dollar merchandising and media franchise. Creator Roiland voiced both Rick Sanchez and Morty Smith in the sci-fi animation before Adult Swim cut ties with him in 2023 amid allegations of domestic abuse. Ian Cardoni and Harry Belden took over from him in the seventh season, while Chris Parnell, Spencer Grammer, and Sarah Chalke voice Jerry, Summer, and Beth, respectively.
‘Rick and Morty’ Is One of the Greatest Sci-Fi Animated Series
Rick and Morty follows the misadventures of Rick, a cynical mad scientist, and his grandson Morty in multiple dimensions. In the beginning, Rick suddenly arrives at his daughter Beth’s doorstep to move in with her and her family after having been missing for nearly 20 years. Although Beth welcomes Rick into her home, her husband, Jerry, isn’t as happy about the family reunion. Jerry is concerned about Rick, a sociopathic scientist, using the garage as his personal laboratory. In the lab, Rick works on a number of sci-fi gadgets, some of which could be considered dangerous. But that’s not all Rick does that concerns Jerry. He also goes on intergalactic adventures that often involve his grandchildren, Morty and Summer.
