Tennessee gets Louisville kicker Cooper Ranvier to replace Max Gilbert

Louisville kicker Cooper Ranvier will transfer to Tennessee football to replace Max Gilbert.

Ranvier is a young accurate kicker. He made 21 of 25 field goals (84%) in the 2025 season as a redshirt freshman, ranked fifth in the ACC. He was 40-of-42 on PAT kicks and scored 102 points, fourth-most in the ACC.

Ranvier was almost automatic on short and mid-range kicks. He was 19-of-20 on field goals under 50 yards. He was 2-of-5 from 50 yards and beyond, making a 50-yarder against Virginia and 51-yarder against Clemson.

The Lexington, Kentucky native previously trained with former Tennessee kicker James Wilhoit. And Ranvier was the No. 5 kicker in the 2024 class, according to the Chris Sailing Kicking, which trains and scouts elite kickers. He has three seasons of eligibility remaining.

Ranvier is Tennessee’s fifth player added from the portal. He joins Kansas State safety Qua Moss, LSU offensive tackle Ory Williams, Auburn cornerback Kayin Lee and Penn State defensive tackle Xavier Gilliam.

Where Cooper Ranvier fits on Tennessee football special teams

Ranvier fills a need for the Vols during this transfer portal cycle after Gilbert transferred to Arkansas.

Gilbert entered the portal after a stressful 2025 season when he made 14 of 19 field goals but missed kicks in critical moments, beginning with a potential game-winner against Georgia.

In two seasons, Gilbert made all 118 PAT kicks and 34 of 45 field goals. His 75.6% on field goals is third best in UT history for kickers who have made at least 25 field goals.

Ranvier didn’t serve as Louisville’s kickoff specialist, but Tennessee doesn’t need one. Josh Turbyville earned 2025 All-SEC honors as a kickoff specialist after recording 67 touchbacks, the third most in the nation.
