Madrid reach Spanish Super Cup final

Real Madrid booked their place in the final of the Spanish Super Cup. The Whites defeated Atlético in the semi-final derby in Jeddah and will fight for their first trophy of the year against Barcelona on Sunday. Valverde’s goal, a stunning missile from a long free-kick, paved the way for Xabi Alonso’s team after two minutes, and after the changing rooms they widened the gap with Rodrygo’s goal, after an assist from the Uruguayan. Sorloth made it 1-2.

The semi-final of the Spanish Super Cup couldn’t have started in a better way for Madrid who took the lead after just two minutes with a superb goal from Valverde. The Uruguayan’s long-range free kick with the outside of his right foot was a missile aimed at the top corner of the goal defended by Oblak, who, despite his stretch, could not get close to the ball. Xabi Alonso’s side had little trouble at the back in the first half hour and could even have made it 2-0 on two consecutive occasions. The first came in the 28th minute after a breakaway by Carreras, who started a quick counter-attack in which Rodrygo cut inside Ruggeri and his left-footed shot was turned away by the red and white keeper. The second, a minute later, was a Bellingham cross and Vini Jr’s header from inside the box missed the target.
