Morning storms rip through Elmore County; thousands lose power

ELMORE COUNTY, Ala. (WSFA) – Morning storms swept through Central Alabama this weekend, knocking down trees and power lines and causing damage to several structures in Elmore County, officials said.
Early Saturday morning, the county was placed under a tornado warning after radar showed rotation, though the National Weather Service had not confirmed a tornado touchdown, Keith Barnett, director of the Elmore County Emergency Management Agency, said.
“The storm carried straight-line winds, and the radar showed rotation, though it has not yet been confirmed whether a tornado touched down,” Barnett said. “We do have a couple of structures that have reported damage. There was one in the 8400 block of Holtville Road, in the Holtville/Slapout community, that had pretty extensive roof damage. It had a storage building that was flipped over. We have a couple of manufactured homes that had their skirting blown out from underneath them. We had another property with a storage building that was flipped over, and two or three addresses with trees that fell on storage sheds or on a couple of vehicles parked on the property.”
Barnett said more than 50 trees and power lines were reported down across the county. At one point, between 6,000 and 10,000 customers were without power, though electricity had been restored for many by midday.
Crews from the county and utility companies worked through the morning to clear debris and restore service. The Elmore County EMA and the National Weather Service were continuing damage assessments.
No injuries have been reported, officials said.
